WEBSITE

Congratulations you are on your way to becoming the next millionaire recruiter…. after you set up your website!

Now depending on how much knowledge you have or whether on not you have any technical ability this article will be sure to guide you in the right direction. I will be guiding you step by step how to set up the website as well as how much everything will be likely to cost.

How much will it all cost

How long is a piece of string… The cost all depends on how much you want to spend. For example these may effect the end price point

  • Custom Website designed by a professional agency would cost £600-£2000+
  • VPN hosting, although not necessary you may get 0.01 seconds faster load speed. I would only recommend a VPN if you plan to list 1000’s of jobs or have a lot of media (images and video) on your website.

If the expensive route above is not for you then, the biggest cost with most start up websites will be the cost of hosting which can be paid monthly or yearly which will work out cheaper but has a larger up front cost.

The best hosting for a recruitment or job website

Most of the well known hosting companies will be fine to use. But do make sure that the hosting has CPanel (Control Panel) as well as having a WordPress installer function which makes it easy to upload WordPress. I have been running websites for over 10 years and have always used 2 hosting providers, HostGator and BlueHost. Both are at similar price points and have pretty much the same functionality. The reason I prefer these two is that they offer FREE 24/7 support every single day of the year. When I say support, this is technical support, if you website gives an error at 2am in the morning on Christmas day there will be somebody available to sort out the issue. I have never had an issue that they have not been able to resolve for me. One of my websites got hacked a few years back and they got rid of the malware and restored my website back to how it was, this saved me £100’s as I was looking at a disaster recovery company who were going to charge me £60 per hour to fix my website. They also offer general assistance with your website or blog, even for me who is technically minded when it comes to websites struggled to set up an SSL certificate which was sorted in a matter of minutes.

How much is BlueHost

With Bluehost they price their plan on a yearly basis with the only option to pay monthly is only after you are coming to the end of your yearly plan. This can be a negative but with the cost being relatively small and I am sure you plan to keep your website going for more than a few months. I prefer to “pay and forget it” with most of my websites so the cost feels like a one time fee rather than a monthly cost. Also under UK tax law you can certainly claim back hosting as a business expense.  Price –  £50-£60 per year which works out to be £3-£5 per month averaged out. The longer the plan you take out the cheaper the monthly average will be. Visit BlueHost.com for more info

How much is HostGator

Unlike Bluehost, HostGator allows you to pay monthly with a cheaper price point. As mentioned it always works out much cheaper if you buy a 1, 2 or 3 year plan with both hosting providers. I personally use Hostgator as I just love their support and any issue I have ever had with them has been resolved to date. Recently I purchased a passive income website from Flippa.com and had an issue with it which they resolved in about 30 seconds (I needed to update WordPress). As I am not a coder it would of took me hours or even days to figure that out or I would of had to pay somebody to fix the issue. I also have had no down time with Hostgator and believe me I would know as I check my Google Analytics pretty much every hour.

Now you need to buy a domain name

A domain name is basically your websites name. This website domain name is KaderAhmed.com, you can register pretty much any extension now days which is what the website ends in. A classic example of this would be .com or .co.uk but there are also many different types of extensions. I would reccomend you buy a .com if possible, if you want to rank well for your local country I would recommend buying your home countries extension which you can see from this list. I have only ever used 2 websites to buy my domain name and the important factor for me was price. GoDaddy – GoDaddy is probably the most well know website name reseller online. If you buy from Godaddy they currently have an offer for “buy 1 year get the 2nd year for £0.01” so it is basically 2 for the price of one. I have never had an issue with them and like both hosting providers they offer free support for any issues you may have. NameCheap – NameCheap as the name suggests aims to be the cheapest domain name provider. I have moved to using NameCheap for any new purchase as they offer a free SSL certificate which most other companies usually charge a monthly or yearly fee for and I use SSL on every one of my websites I own and run purely for the fact that they help you rank higher in Google by having one. Overall NameCheap is slightly less in cost than Godaddy if you buy the domain for 1 year but if you want to buy the domain name for more than 1 year then do take advantage of Godaddy’s buy one year get the second for free offer. A domain name purchase isn’t a big deal as you are only registering the name for a period of time and one you link the website to your hosting then chances are will probably not be logging into your NameCheap or Godaddy for a while unless something goes wrong or you want to move or sell your website.

What to do next after you buy hosting and your domain name

Once you have your hosting and domain name you want to now link them together. You need to then add your Name Server link onto the DNS panel on your Godaddy or Namecheap account. I made a video demonstrating this below. Feel free to watch the video as I step by step show how to install and set up wordpress which is the functionality of the whole website. The reason I and the rest of the world love WordPress is that is requires no coding experience and you can make your WordPress blog into pretty much any website. There are currently 500,000 live websites using WordPress for this very reason.

Install a theme

You may be asking what is a wordpress theme is, well in a nutshell it is the pre-made design for any wordpress website. There are 100,000’s of themes, a lot of them are free for anybody to use. You should have no issue finding a theme for your recruitment website, whether you want to have a job board style or a simple consultancy page there will be a theme to suit you whatever industry or sector you are in. If you watched the video above you will know that in order to upload a theme to your website, it is as easy as clicking a button and you will have your ready made website up and running.

Setting up your business email

No business is complete without a business email and trust me as an experienced recruiter you will be using your email pretty much every single day. This is not a step you can skip, you will not be taking seriously by any client or candidate if you are emailing from a @gmail.com or a @hotmail.com email address. Hostgator actually offer a unlimited email addresses so I would advise to make good use of it and make a few email address such as: info@yourdomain.com, contact@yourdomain.com and yourname@yourdomain.com. I personal use Hostgator for some of my websites but for functionality reasons for my recruitment business I use G Suite which is owned by Google and has many features. The cost is around £4 per month and for such a small cost it is totally worth having linked to my mobile so I can access my emails all day every day and never miss an email from a potential client or candidate.

Total cost

If you follow my method the total cost is actually not that expensive, I have averaged out the pricing with what I would choose and what provider I would recommend using.

  • Domain Name – £11 (for 2 years with Godaddy)
  • Website Hosting – £114.84 for 3 years (£3.19 per month) or £57.60 for 1 year (£4.80 per month)
  • Website design (theme) – £0 if you use a free theme, however if you buy a premium theme you are likely to have a cost of around £50 for a decent theme.

So the overall cost on the low end would be £68.60 for a full website set up for 1 year.

Your done!

Well sort of, your website should be up and running now. However your job now is to edit all the text on the website. You can do this by clicking appearance > Customize and edit all the sections from there. This will all be done through yourdomain/wp-admin admin page on your website.
